This distinctive red wine opens with a breath of roasted espresso beans and almonds backed by a quenching minerality. As it evolves, the nose shows off deep plum, blackberry, and tobacco aromatics. The palate is rugged and bold, with nuances of white pepper, dark chocolate, and anise layered upon expressive hints of cherry and marzipan. The finish is textured and pleasantly weighted with an ethereal complexity at the back of the palate, shining with cranberry and cinnamon bark. The tannins are soft yet firm, giving the wine a lingering complexity echoing the tone of the wine’s bouquet.
We began our 2019 harvest before dawn on August 30. After a growing season that started in winter with record rainfall, the year ended with warm, even temperatures throughout summer. With few spikes in heat over the period, our vineyards had optimal conditions to develop full-flavored fruit with remarkable color and balanced acidity. Spring rains ended in time for good fruit set. The temperate summer allowed for long hang times and consistent, even ripening. We picked the majority of our fruit in September and the weather continued to cooperate. Warm breezy days, but fortunately no rain took place in October and the last of the grapes were harvested before the end of the month.
The Cabernet Sauvignon for this illustrious wine is sourced from our Lagomarsino Estate Vineyard in the Russian River Valley. The blend features five unique blocks of premium Cabernet Sauvignon from this hillside vineyard. The wine incorporates Petite Sirah from our Wild Oak Estate Vineyard in the Sonoma Valley, showcasing familial similarities and the delicate nuance of the terroir.
The five Cabernet Sauvignon lots were fermented individually and blended together before going to barrel to age for 20 months. The five lots were chosen for their unique expression of the vineyard, ranging from brightly fruit-forward wines to rich, savory lots. The Petite Sirah was blended in 3 months before bottling, bringing a lifted blueberry and floral note to complement the Cabernet and round out the final blend.
