A delight for the senses. This wine is masterfully crafted, resulting in remarkable depth, complexity, and structure. It unveils a nose reminiscent of a blue fruit symphony, dominated by blueberry and currant notes, complemented by subtle hints of vanilla bean and jasmine florals for an added touch of elegance. The palate is a juicy and fruit-forward experience, where cranberry takes center stage, accompanied by nuances of cold slate minerality that introduce a pleasing complexity. Delicate tannins and soft acidity contribute to the overall delight of drinking this wine, while the long and salivating finish leaves you yearning for more.
The 2021 growing season saw near-perfect growing conditions. With minimal winter rain, the vines were awakened with ideal moderate springtime temperatures, eliminating any frost threat to the developing buds. At most sites, fruit set was during the optimal timeframe due to warm, consistent conditions. Veraison occurred 7-10 days earlier than in previous years due to the temperate weather and minimal rain. Moderate daytime temperatures and cool nights throughout the summer months, with a few of the regular short-lived heat spikes, allowing for excellent flavor development. The year saw an early harvest, with 90% of the region’s grapes being picked before the late Fall.
The Cabernet Sauvignon fruit comes from our Certified Sustainable Estate Lagomarsino Vineyard in Russian River Valley. This scenic vineyard, just south of the town of Healdsburg, ascends into the foothills, providing warm, sunny days above the fog line, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The long growing season of the Russian River Valley allows full ripeness but with less aggressive tannins than in warmer regions. We source the Syrah from our Certified Sustainable Estate Wild Oak vineyard located at the foot of Hood Mountain. This cool climate vineyard is located on the western end of the Sonoma Valley, AVA. The gradual south-facing slope of this vineyard, provides ample sun exposure, while coastal winds and seasonal inversion layers counter the hottest days with cool nights. The rocky, volcanic soil of the vineyard develops uniquely earthly qualities as well as a charismatic varietal structure.
One Cabernet Sauvignon lot was fermented individually before going to barrel to age for 17 months. This lot was chosen for it’s unique expression of the vineyard, ranging from brightly fruit-forward to rich and savory. The Syrah was all fermented separately, using whole cluster techniques with the intent to elevate distinctive spicy characters from the stems to compliment the red fruit and floral characters of the varieties. The final blend was assembled and aged for 3 months before bottling, while the composition of the final blend ends up stylistically having 9% whole cluster fermentation.
