Tasting Notes
This sophisticated wine showcases a complex yet harmonious profile, balancing polished layers of flavor and texture. The aromatic bouquet reveals fresh raspberry, floral, and spicy notes, drawing you into the wine’s allure. On the palate, mixed berries and dark chocolate unfold seamlessly, creating a creamy, broad mid-palate that feels both luxurious and inviting. Subtle undertones of suede leather and rich vanilla bean add depth and refinement, while bright acidity from pomegranate and goji berry flavors lends a refreshing lift. Despite its richness, the wine concludes with a clean, refreshing finish, making Tres Viejos an ideal pairing for diverse dishes or a sublime standalone indulgence.
Vintage Notes
Our 2022 harvest began just a little earlier than the previous year, with the first fruit picked on August 15. Limited rainfall during the growing season produced slightly lighter crops, bringing intense, concentrated flavor and color. The consistent weather during the summer months helped maintain fruit acidity, bringing brightness and balance to the fruit’s flavors. Harvest continued through the middle of October when we picked the last red grapes from our Sonoma Valley estate, Wild Oak Vineyard.
Vineyard Notes
Translated literally, ‘tres viejos’ means “three old men.” At St. Francis, we use it to describe some of our exceptionally old, head-trained Zinfandel vines. Each year, Winemaker Katie Madigan chooses fruit from three distinct regions across Sonoma County for a special blend in honor of these distinctively noteworthy vines. The Russian River Valley fruit (10%) has bright, fresh acidity. The Zinfandel from Alexander Valley (7%) is fresh yet concentrated with wild berry flavors. The Sonoma Valley fruit (83%) is both dark and intensely flavored. All vines are over 60 years old and are expressive of their distinct growing regions.
Winemaker Notes
Winemaker Katie Madigan ferments each lot independently in order to allow their unique characteristics to shine. She wants this wine to showcase the heritage of Sonoma County Zinfandel. After aging in French oak barrels, this proprietary blend is finalized with an addition of Petite Sirah, reflecting the very best of the vintage.
